How to Get a Lakshadweep Entry Permit: Complete 2024 Guide

15 January 2025

Entry to Lakshadweep requires a special permit. Here's everything you need to know about obtaining your permit hassle-free.

Lakshadweep Entry Permit — Everything You Need to Know

Unlike other Indian destinations, Lakshadweep (a Union Territory) requires all visitors to obtain an entry permit before visiting. Here's a comprehensive guide.

Why Is a Permit Required?

Lakshadweep's ecosystem is fragile and its population small. The permit system controls tourist numbers to prevent environmental degradation and respect the local community's way of life.

For Indian Nationals

Indian tourists need a Tourist Entry Permit issued by the Lakshadweep Administration. The most common and easiest route is to book through a licensed tour operator — they handle the entire permit process on your behalf.

  • Documents required: Passport / Aadhaar card / Voter ID
  • Processing time: 7–14 days
  • Cost: Included in most tour packages

For Foreign Nationals

Foreign nationals require a Restricted Area Permit (RAP). This must be obtained before arrival in India and requires additional documentation. Only specific islands are accessible to foreign nationals — check the current approved island list.

Islands Open for Tourism

Not all 36 islands are open to tourists. Currently accessible islands include Agatti, Kavaratti, Bangaram, Kadmat, Minicoy, Kalpeni, and Thinnakara (subject to change).
