Agatti Island: Gateway Island with World-Class Reefs
Last updated: 15 October 2024
Agatti is home to Lakshadweep's only civilian airport. Beyond its role as entry point, it boasts spectacular coral reefs and a tranquil lagoon perfect for all water sports.
Agatti Island — Where Paradise Begins
Agatti Island serves a dual role — it is Lakshadweep's air gateway (home to the only civilian airport in the archipelago) and one of the most beautiful islands in its own right. Many travellers rush through to reach other islands, missing what Agatti has to offer.
The Reef
Agatti's surrounding reef is among the most biodiverse in Lakshadweep. The house reef just metres from shore drops dramatically to depths of 30+ metres. SCUBA divers will find an abundance of coral formations, reef sharks, rays, and sea turtles.
Agatti Lagoon
The lagoon here is smaller and more intimate than Kavaratti's, giving it a more secluded feel. The water is a vivid shade of blue-green, and the sandy beach runs the length of the western shore. Sunsets here are incomparable.
Top Activities
- SCUBA Diving: Multiple dive sites accessible within 15 minutes by boat.
- Snorkelling: The house reef is accessible by swimming from shore.
- Kayaking: Paddle across the lagoon to nearby sandbanks.
- Windsurfing: Best from November to February when trade winds are consistent.
- Beach Walks: The 7-km island is perfect for long walks at dawn and dusk.
Practical Information
Agatti is accessible by direct flight from Kochi (1.5 hours). The island has limited tourist infrastructure — one government-run tourist complex and a handful of home-stays. Pre-booking is essential.
Day Trips
From Agatti, popular day trips include the uninhabited Bangaram Island (45 minutes by speedboat) and the sandbank islands of Perumal Par and Valiyapani.
