Bangaram Island: Lakshadweep's Jewel of the Sea
Last updated: 1 November 2024
Uninhabited and exclusive, Bangaram Island is Lakshadweep's most prestigious destination — an oval atoll of pure white sand, turquoise water, and legendary dive sites.
Bangaram Island — The Crown Jewel
Bangaram is the most celebrated island in Lakshadweep, and for good reason. This small, uninhabited atoll — accessible only via speedboat from Agatti — is home to the Bangaram Island Resort, one of India's most exclusive beach properties.
What Makes Bangaram Special
Bangaram is unique in that it has no permanent residents. The entire island is devoted to the resort and its guests, which means minimal crowds and maximum exclusivity. The surrounding reef is one of the healthiest and most spectacular in India.
Bangaram Wreck Dive
The island's most famous dive site is the 'British Loyalty' wreck — an oil tanker that sank in 1947 and now rests at 30 metres depth, completely encrusted with coral and teeming with marine life. It is considered one of Asia's top wreck dives.
The Lagoon
The Bangaram atoll lagoon is a vast expanse of calm water enclosed by the main island and several smaller sand strips. Snorkelling in the lagoon reveals pristine coral gardens mere metres from the beach.
Marine Life
Bangaram's waters are home to hammerhead sharks, manta rays, whale sharks (seasonal), sea turtles nesting on the beach, and hundreds of reef fish species. Turtles nest on the beach from May to October.
Accommodation
The Bangaram Island Resort offers thatched-roof cottages and premium cabanas with direct beach access. All-inclusive meal plans are mandatory. The property has no air conditioning (cool sea breezes suffice) and deliberately minimal facilities to preserve the natural ambience.
Getting There
Fly to Agatti Island, then take a 45-minute speedboat transfer (arranged by the resort). There is no other way to reach Bangaram.
